Brenda Dyer...Prophecy's Child!

I'm thrilled to have my pal Brenda Dyer in the house with us today! (cheers in the background)

Brenda is the talented author who brought us Love's Prophecy, a vamp romance with a difference, and I'm so glad she's here to tell us about book 2 in the series, Prophecy's Child. And to make it extra memorable, she is graciously doing a giveaway so read on and make sure you comment with your email address. I can tell you I've read both books, and they are fabulous and sexy, the sorts of books you want to share with everyone you know.

Thanks for being here, Brenda!

The Ties that Bind

Hello, everyone. So glad you stopped in to visit with me today. Before I begin, I’d like to thank Rosanna for having me on her blog today. Thank you, Rosanna.

Today I’d like to talk a little about my favorite author, J.R.R Tolkien, and how he has been a major influence to me and my writing.
You may be wondering how the heck a well known—famous—high fantasy author could possibly influence a paranormal—vampires—romance author. Well, I’ll explain. But first, how about you grab yourself a coffee or tea, and maybe a couple of chocolate chip cookies...or maybe a slice of apple/caramel coffee cake. Damn, that does sound good. Hold on, brb...
Okay, I’m back. Had to get a coffee and a piece of coffee cake.
So, onto the subject at hand. As I’ve said, J.R.R Tolkien is my ALL TIME favorite author. His Lord of the Rings trilogy—I’m also going to include The Hobbit, because to me they are all part of the same story—are out-of-this-world fantastic. I love the characters, his attention to detail, the age-old troupe of good versus evil. Damnit, the man is nothing short of brilliant!
But what I love the absolute most about J.R.R Tolkien’s LOTR’s—including The Hobbit—is the rich and detailed history—how everything ties together. He didn’t just write a few stories, he created A WHOLE NEW WORLD, from the beginning of the creation of Middle Earth, to the first evil, the heroes and heroines who lost their lives to destroy the evil, those you triumphed over it, to the Valar sending wizards to help when all seemed hopeless, finally, onto the destruction of Sauron’s ring in Mt Doom.
For those of you who are J.R.R Tolkien fans, you have to read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Both are a must!
Anyway, back to how Tolkien influenced me. Well, I’m a huge lover of romance novels, especially paranormal romances. And vampires are my number one favs. So a few years before I began writing, an idea formed in my mind. Oh, at first my thoughts weren’t on romance. My mind was busy creating history, lol. This history was about how and why vampires exist.
As this new idea was forming, my mind was buzzing with ideas. Then finally came the day when I started writing Love’s Prophecy—the first book in the Prophecy Series. I didn’t simply want to write a story, I wanted to create a whole new world. I wanted each and every book in this series to tie together. My books are stories which are part of something bigger! They are part of a story that has been ongoing since before the creation of Earth!
When I’m finished writing the Prophecy Series—six books in all with a novella about Roarik—then I will start on the next series, which will be part of the Prophecy’s Series—the conclusion, you could say. And once that series is finished, I will probably write a novel about the fifty first vampire clans sent to Earth. This novel will take place far, far back in time. I may even go back further and begin at the very beginning, lol.
My latest release—Prophecy’s Child, book #2 in the Prophecy Series, reveals even more. But each book, although part of a series, are complete—even stand alone—novels. They all have a HEA for the characters, but the backbone of the series keeps going, slowly revealing more and more with each book published.

I’ll end this post with the blurb and an excerpt from Prophecy’s Child.

Leave a comment for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card and an e-copy of Prophecy’s Child or Love’s Prophecy.

Blurb:
His secret will shatter her world.
Katherine Colby’s life splintered ten years ago when her lover suddenly vanished, leaving her with more than a broken heart. But when Kal unexpectedly makes an appearance, her safe, dependable existence is shattered once more. Drawn into Kal’s deadly world of vampires and demons, she must now put aside her hurt and anger and learn to trust him. Can she forgive past deceptions and find the courage to love again? Or will she turn away the one man who owns her heart and soul?
Her secret will change his life.
Powerful, and lethal, Kal is a vampire warrior, sworn to protect humans from demons. Loving Katherine too much to pull her into his dangerous world, Kal deserted her, believing his decision was best for them both. But not even time could assuage his yearning for the woman who has captured his heart. As fate tosses them together once again, Kal must fight to win Katherine’s trust and forgiveness before evil separates them forever. But is he ready to become the man she needs him to be? Or will he lose the one woman he can’t live without?

Excerpt:
Kal noticed the stiff set of Katherine’s shoulders as she walked over to a straight-backed chair in the corner and dragged it next to the bed. She sat down and clasped her hands on her lap. Gone was the warm, loving look from earlier. It was replaced with her wary mask.
He cleared his throat.
Do it.
“Kat, our son was right. It was a demon that did this to me.”
She blinked. “What?”
“I was attacked by a demon.”
Alarm flared in her eyes, and her cheeks turned chalky-white. “No,” she whispered. “Demons aren’t real.”
“They are, I’m afraid.”
Leaning back in her seat, she crossed her arms, and her expression turned hard. “You want me to believe there’re demons running around—as in demons from hell?”
“Yes, but vampires call it the Forgotten Realm. And Lucifer is the king of that realm.”
“So, a demon shot you with arrows?” She laughed, but the sound held no humor.
“Yes.”
The corners of her lips trembled. “This is insane.”
“I know.” With his good arm and leg, he pulled and pushed himself into a sitting position. “I am a warrior, and my job, along with many other vampire warriors, is to hunt and kill demons. In return, demons hunt us. We are the only thing that stands in the way of their goal—their purpose”
“Which is?”
“To manipulate and corrupt humans and turn them away from their Creator—or God as humans have named Him.”
“For what purpose?” She smirked. “Oh let me guess. For the devil?”
Kal tried to keep his voice even. “Yes.”
“I see.”
“No, you don’t.”
Yeah, like hell she did. It was plain as the nose on her face that she thought he was feeding her a plate-full of bullshit.
“What I see is you’re trying to screw with me. I just can’t figure out why.”
Kal rubbed his closed eyes then glanced sideways at her. “Can you do something for me?”
“Like what?”
“Can you please save your judgment until after I explain?”
Katherine glared at him. “I’m not promising anything, but please carry on with your…story.”
“As you know, the Earth was formed by The Creator for humans. But what you may not know is the lesser gods or angels did all the physical labor. Lucifer fell in love with what he helped make, and he wanted to stay. The Creator said no way then basically ordered him to get his ass back to the Sacred Dimension. This pissed good old Lucifer off. He couldn’t get over the fact humans not only had the Earth, but when they died, their souls went to the Sacred Dimension. Also, rumor has it Lucifer was jealous over his father’s love for humans.
“Lucifer decided he would destroy humans and take back the Earth. He almost succeeded, but the gods stepped in and Lucifer retreated. From then on, he was banned from the Earth. There was peace for a while.

Sharon Stevenson...Raised!

Hi everyone!
I'm so pleased to introduce something a little different today. Author Sharon Stevenson has a new paranormal and this one sounds thrilling and very fun. I have a feeling Raised: Part One might end up on everyone's TBR list after today!

Blurb:

In a world where magic crashed to earth in a rusty spaceship full of starving blood suckers, it’s not easy being a reanimated dead guy. Take Pete’s undead word for it…

Pete has been murdered by a mentally unhinged and suicidal one night stand. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s been reanimated for reasons unknown by… persons unknown. This makes him an Animate without an owner, the human equivalent of a stray dog.

Afraid of who his owner may be and what they have planned for his undead ass, Pete does the only thing he can; he goes on the run. The King’s Guard are Scotland’s primary recruiters for Animates so Pete knows he has to leave Edinburgh to escape a fate that terrifies him.

The portal to Las Vegas could be his only hope or his biggest mistake...

Can Pete escape enslavement when it’s what he’s been raised for?

Excerpt:

I was going to a hell of a lot of trouble to escape a fate that terrified me.  I realised that when I saw the queue for passport control.  The long winding line was chock-full of people going for a night out, or a mini-break.  It was strictly hand-luggage only.  You want to take a suitcase?  Go take a nine hour flight and go through several hours of security checks.

It occurred to me that I might face harsher penalties for running than I would if I just faced up to things and went back to my flat to wait for the inevitable draft into the Guard.

I just couldn’t do it.  See, I had a friend in first year.  Timmy Wallace.  He was a total shit.  I mean he’d spread nasty rumours for no other reason than he was bored.   He’d trip anyone he ever got the chance to, particularly if there was a nice muddy puddle on the ground.   He’d once snogged the face off a girl I said I liked and then told her she had cock-breath.  He was just that kind of guy.

So what happened should have been funny.  It really should have been.  Call it kharmic payback times a thousand.  We were in his kitchen one dreary rainy Saturday and he was talking about dipping his junk in a glass of cola his sister had left unattended on the table.  ‘No-one wants to see that’, I was protesting.  He ignored me as usual, standing up and unzipping his jeans.  And that was when it happened.

The back door swung open and banged against the wall.  I swear to god there was a crack of lightning at just that precise moment.  The thing that staggered forward was bruised and bloodied and huge.  It took me a few wild-eyed seconds to realise it was Timmy’s dad.  He groaned loudly.  The ripped up bloodied clothes were nothing, it was his face that shocked me immobile.  Half of it was hanging off, revealing bloody mulch and bone far more graphic than any horror movie I’d ever been forced to watch.  I screamed.  Timmy pissed on the floor, and then he fainted.

The King’s Guard weren’t long in following the zombie into the house.  I knew Timmy’s dad was dead.  I mean his head had been reshaped to something incapable of housing a brain.  There was a massive hole on top and I saw the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen in my life.  And I’d thought catching sight of Timmy’s junk was going to be bad?  Maggot infested head-wound tops that any day.  Christ, I didn’t sleep for months.  The soldiers grabbed him as he lunged at Timmy.  They were efficient, I’ll give them that.  Some of the zombie-thing’s brains leaked out.  The one on the right scooped the mess up straight out of Timmy’s piss and stuffed it back in his dad’s head hole.  I threw up right on the table.  That drew a bit of attention.

The two soldiers turned and stared at me.  Their eyes bored through me, blank and glassy in their blue-grey faces.  Their expressions were just as unreadable.  Terror gripped me.  I didn’t know what they might do.  I stopped breathing.  That’s when I realised I knew one of them, or I had done.  Mum’s old boyfriend, Frankie.  Hadn’t seen the guy in months and here he was staring right at me with blank eyes that remembered nothing of the countless days at the park and nights playing stupid board games.  Suddenly Mum’s silent tears over their break-up took on new meaning.  My head started to spin so I forced myself to suck in a breath.  My eyes refused to leave Frankie.  I willed him to show some spark of recognition but his expression never changed.

They both turned back to Timmy’s gargling dad and hefted him out the back door, no explanation uttered.  Weeks later, when Timmy was allowed back to school, he started calling me puke-breath and telling me his dad was asking for me, for my braaaiiiins!  I hadn’t even told people he’d pissed himself.  So not only was I still being haunted by the horrors of that night, I also got to feel like a total twat for being nice to the prick.

I shiver at the very thought of that night.  Timmy’s dad got enlisted.  The User had raised him a little later than he strictly should have, so there were some wasting ‘issues’ that needed taken care off.  They called a Healer and that was that; one more dead guy drafted into the Guard.  I never did see Frankie again.  Not that I’d ever want to, now that I knew.

The line rumbled forward slowly.  I folded my arms.  Anything had to be better than that.  At least right now I still felt like myself, more or less.  If I was a little more limited in some ways and enhanced in others so be it, I was still me.  I still liked the same things.  I still just wanted to get through the day and come home to watch shit on TV and pull drunk girls in night clubs on the weekend.  Was that so much to ask?

Finding inspiration in every day life

An author has many jobs.

First and foremost, of course, is creating engaging stories with plots and characters that speak to readers. It almost looks easy when I see it written on paper, but it's not always so. And now that several of my books have been published, I'm confronted by the unenviable task of finding new sources of inspiration. After all, without inspiration, an author has nothing.

When I was first published, the ideas flew from me, almost without bidding. You see, I'd been stockpiling plot bunnies for years, often without even being conscious of it. When Liquid Silver Books expressed an interest in my work, I was able to put many of those plot bunnies into action, and my canon of books was born.

But now I'm working on #9, and I'm finding my Muse has grown stubborn and petulant. I think I'm going to take away her chocolate supply and see if that knocks her into shape.

However, assuming my Muse refuses to co-operate even then, it's my job to seek inspiration elsewhere. For a paranormal writer, that isn't always easy. After all, where I live, vamps and shifters don't hang out at the corner coffee shop (I wish). So where do I find my inspiration and new plot ideas?

In every day life.

This involves getting a little naughty sometimes, playing detective and finagling scenarios where there might not actually be any.

That handsome, sun-burnt man loitering outside the bar, waiting for his date? Perhaps he's a vampire who was exposed to the sun.

The dark-haired nanny corralling a gaggle of flaxen-haired children? A witch who steals children in the night.

The young woman with the sad face, sitting on a bench outside the library, eating a sandwich? One half of a pair of doomed lovers, whose boyfriend was sucked into a different time period, drawn perhaps to his demise.

The young man in a kayak on the lake at dawn, rowing furiously and practicing for Olympic try outs? Perhaps he's actually a cursed human on the run from a monster who cannot step foot in the water. (Okay, that one feels like a stretch, but I'm thinking on my feet here!)

There's nothing wrong with pilfering from life. Writers do it every day, and in extremely creative ways. And you never know when a seemingly-banal incident will become an interesting nugget for a novel.

Now excuse me while I grab my notebook. I have to pick up a few items at the grocery store, and you never know who might be in the line up with me!

Donna Augustine...The Keepers!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting author Donna Augusting online, and just knew I had to invite her to my Room. Donna has a hot new series and it deserves some attention, folks. Read on, because I'm sure you'll want to put The Keepers on your TBR list today!

Welcome Donna.

Good Characters, Bad Characters...and My Characters?
When I started writing, I didn't set out to write ethically ambiguous lead characters. Growing up, I loved a great book about  good versus evil. So what happened? I didn't exactly know myself.

When I started writing The Keepers, the more I wrote, the worse it got. Don't get me wrong, I'd never meant to make them saints, but as I uncovered their pasts, they just got worse and worse and the bad deeds kept piling up. Even as I continue writing now, I'm a little taken aback myself at the things these people are willing to do.

And then I realized that as I've gotten older, I view everything a bit more cynically, and it's bleeding into my creative side. Gone are the rose colored glasses of my youth and all the pedestals have been long since destroyed. This new world view is not as bad as it might seem though at first glance. I've found that I enjoy people's flaws. I've learned to forgive much more easily than I ever did. And although the flaws might be more exaggerated in my novels, the characters are a hell of a lot fun to write.

Excerpt:

He walked up and stood next to me, close enough that I could feel the heat of his body. I could see him stare at me, out of the corner of my eye, but I busied myself looking down at my order pad instead of meeting his gaze.
He leaned down close to my ear and said in the softest whisper, “Am I making you uncomfortable Jo?”
His warm breath on my ear sent a shiver down my spine. I wanted to instantly take a step away, but that would be almost as bad as admitting it, so I held my ground and forced myself to meet his eyes. “No, why would you?”
“That’s good. I wouldn’t want to make you nervous.” He ran a finger along the length of my arm. “Are you cold?”
“A little,” I lied, knowing he had noticed the goose bumps on my skin.
He smiled down at me. He had a beautiful smile, dimples and all. “We’re going to be spending a lot of time together,” he said. “I really do want you to feel comfortable.” His hand came to rest on the small of my back.
“Maybe it’s better if we aren’t too comfortable, considering that you are my boss.”
He laughed. “Why? Do you feel sexually harassed?”
“No.”
“Then I guess I’ll have to try harder next time.”
My heart was beating out of my chest as he walked away.

Predator's Serenade...a teaser before release day!

Well, if you read any of Predator's Kiss, book 1 in my Gemini Island shifters series, you know this much: Soren Snow is a tease.

So I thought it only appropriate that I do a little tease of my own before he gets his release day August 12. Please stay tuned and remember that Predator's Serenade is coming to you then but is available for pre-order now at www.lsbooks.com.

In the mean time, enjoy a little Soren on me.

Excerpt:

The next day, Gioia tagged along on one of Ryland's nature walks for the young shifters in his mentoring program. Gunnar hadn't wanted to go and had expressed his disdain through a lengthy scowl and arms crossed tightly over his chest. After some cajoling, she'd been able to persuade him to give it a try. He barely socialized at home, preferring to stick to his drums, and he needed to be around kids like him. It might be his only good opportunity.

When Soren Snow showed up, she did everything she could not to make the hitch in her breath obvious. Even still, she was all too aware of the man. It was hard to miss his commanding figure and the way the sun seemed to hit his hair at perfect angles, illuminating golden highlights that were undoubtedly never touched by Miss Clairol. Now, while Ryland explained to his young charges which berries were safe to ingest and which would make one upchuck a lunch, Soren brought up the rear of the group. The rock star shifter tramped on some Queen Anne's Lace that had the audacity to grow in his path.

Gioia darted a look of sympathy at the now-wilted weeds. She nodded at Soren. "I guess the great outdoors isn't quite your cup of tea."

He glared at her. "I don't drink tea."

"Noted," she replied under her breath. "Remind me not to invite you to my next tea party."

He stopped marching and regarded her, appraising eyes under arched brows. "I suppose you're right at home here among all the overgrown shrubs and poison ivy."

She ignored his dig and considered the lush greenery of her surroundings, so different from her prairie home. "I love it here. The quiet, the majesty of the place. I could spend hours wandering in these woods. I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be." She arched her own brow in his direction. "But I can see why you’d feel differently. You must have important people to see. I'm sure Eddie Van Halen is waiting for you somewhere in the hopes of jamming with you."

Soren's lip thinned and he blushed. "Actually, I am meeting up with Eddie next month. We’re collaborating on a project."

She tried not to explode with a guffaw. "Oh, well, I am impressed."

"Most people would be."

Gioia's foot stopped mid-air. She blinked, set it down, and turned to him. "You know what would really impress me, music man?"

"No, what?" he said on a quiet snarl.

She nodded at Ryland's group of kids. "If you could manage to impart some sort of genuine wisdom to those kids, my heart would overflow with admiration for you." She put her hands on her hips in a silent dare.

His gaze narrowed on her hips and then made the slow climb back up to her face. He gaped at her for a long moment before turning and marching over to his brother.

Ryland addressed the kids. "So, I’ve been flapping my gums at you all morning. How about you guys telling me something you've learned about being shifters?"

Soren cleared his throat. Gioia watched, far too amused, as a dozen teenaged heads turned toward him and as Soren bit his bottom lip. "As a shifter, you'll sometimes be forced to rely on your senses and speed."

Ryland gawked at his brother, clearly unaccustomed to receiving input from him. "You're right, Soren. Can you give us an example of when that's happened to you?"

"Sure." Soren shrugged, but then his eyes widened in excitement. "Oh, I remember this one time. Three of the more aggressive fans from the Nevada chapter of my fan club had followed me after a gig at Caesar's Palace. Those girls chased me all over the Vegas strip. I finally lost them and stumbled back to my suite at the Venetian, only to find the guys from Mötley Crüe had kicked in the door to my room and brought a dozen models with them. Someone puked all over my luggage. I'm still not sure who, but I haven't returned Vince Neil's calls since. I really wasn't in the mood to party, so I had to escape, even though Tommy Lee’s new girlfriend was coming onto me like it was nobody's business. I made a dash for it. And when I did, the girls from the fan club found me again. They followed me, but I lost them somewhere in the casino. Sometimes a guy gets tired of the whole Beatlemania thing, you know?"

No one said a word for a full minute. The only noise in the woods was a red squirrel, scurrying along a tree branch.

Soren shifted his balance from one foot to the other, clearly realizing a second too late that his story might not really be appropriate for the crowd. And even though Gioia considered his tale to be probably the most outlandish she'd ever heard, she smiled at him, wanting for some reason to put him at ease.

As the kids followed Ryland down another path, seemingly eager to escape, Soren looked at her, red-faced. He shook his head, regarding her through hooded eyes, and offered her a begrudging smile in return.

Blurb:

There are three things that make bear shifter Soren Snow’s skin crawl: mothers, their children, and the great outdoors. Soren is a famed musician and playboy, and he would rather spend his days pressing the flesh with the women in his fan club than developing meaningful relationships. When his brother calls in a favor, forcing Soren to revisit the Ursa Fishing Lodge in Northern Ontario, he couldn’t be more displeased. However, he owes his brother big time.

Gioia Clementine would rather not meet Soren, her drummer son’s rock idol. But when tragedy strikes her home, it seems the only one the boy might respond to is Soren. Gioia begrudgingly agrees to let her son meet him, hoping the rock star won’t turn her tween into a musical misogynist.

When Gioia and Soren meet, the sexual chemistry threatens to set the Ontario woodland ablaze. Can these two opposites find a common ground? And can they manage to resolve their unwanted feelings, even when a mysterious stranger arrives at the lodge, threatening everything?

Predator's Serenade will be released Aug. 12.
